Oba Akiolu’s Comment ‘Jimi Agbaje Will Never Govern Lagos State’ Is Contemptuous

Oba Akiolu Vs Jimi Agbaje

According to a report by DailyPost, the Oba of Lagos, Akiolu insists Jimi Agbaje will never govern Lagos State – DailyPost Nigeria. However, a Nigerian Attorney Emmanuel Eke says that the Oba’s comments are contemptuous of the proceedings of the Lagos State election tribunal.

“Suppose the tribunal rules otherwise what will the Oba Akiolu do?”, “Will he stop Agbaje from being sworn in or what?”,  Mr. Eke asked.

Throw back in 1983, after the Imo State governorship election between Dr Sam Mbakwe and Chief Alex Obi. Gov Mbakwe won the election but Obi went to court. In a news talk from the then Imo Broadcasting Service, Mr Nnamdi Olebra had stated that “come shine or rain Mbakwe must be sworn in as Gov of Imo State. Really?

Next day Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa as he then was, summoned Olebra to state reason why he must not be committed for contempt in pre-empting his judgment. Nnamdi Olebra was put in prison for one night for that “over talk” that come night or rain Mbakwe must be sworn in as governor for a matter that was pending in court.

Though Chief Mbakwe still won the case. This is exactly why the Oba comments amount to contempt if actually he made those comments.
