Buhari Fires Director Of Budget To Save Face On Fraudulent 2016 Budget


In an effort to cushion the tension over the fraudulent 2016 budget controversies, President Buhari on Monday February 15, 2016, fired the Director-General for Budget, Mr Yaya Gusau, and at the same time announced Mr. Tijjani Abdullahi as a replacement. Also, Buhari appointed Mr. Ben Akabueze as Special Adviser to the President on National Planning. These two appointment took immediate effect.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, says that the new Director of Budget, Mr. Tijjani Abdullahi, “is a fellow of the Certified National Accountants of Nigeria, and a banker of repute with experience in managing public finance.

According to Vanguard reports, “the new Director-General of Budget is expected to work with the Minister of Budget and National Planning to efficiently deliver on the mandates of the Budget Office of the Federation.”

On the new Special Adviser to the President on National Planning, Mr. Akabueze who is the immediate past Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State. Moreover, Akabueze has worked in senior management positions in Citi Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank for Africa, NAL Merchant Bank, Sterling Bank and BIA Consulting Limited, among others.

Buhari’s 2016 Budget has been plagued with lots of controversy, including missing from from NASS after submission, and then the legislature accusing the Executive of padding and doctoring provisions made by ministries departments and agencies of government.
