Mali Wins Ivory Coast To Reach Chan Final, Nigeria Crashed Out At Group Stage

Mali upset African champions Ivory Coast 1-0 to qualify to the finals of the African Nations Championships in Rwanda on Thursday.

“Malian substitute Yves Bissouma scored the 88th minute winner to set up a final clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday (February 7, 2016).

“The losers will play debutants Guinea in the play-off on the same day. Mali should have gone ahead in the 32 minute when Mamadou Coulibaly had a penalty saved by the Ivorian keeper Ali Sangare Badra when he tipped the ball over the bar,” Vanguard reported.

It was the Ivorians who took the game to the Malians in the opening minutes. ‘Les Elephants almost broke the deadlock on nine minutes when Essis Aka’s shot bounced off the post with Mali goalie Djigui Diarra completely beaten.

In an earlier development, in 2014, the Nigeria National Team (Super Eagles) won bronze medal in their debut appearance under coach Stephen Keshi.

However, the Super Eagles failed to make it out of the group stage of the 2016 edition under coach Sunday Oliseh.  That contest saw  Tunisia and Guinea progressing ahead of the Sunday Oliseh’s team.

“Since the shocking ouster of the Super Eagles from the ongoing African Nations Championships in Rwanda, there have been mounting fears over the fate of head Coach, Sunday Oliseh,” Vanguard reported.
